Best-selling car brands in South Africa

A grand total of 43,060 new cars were sold in South Africa in May 2023 – a 10.1% increase compared to the same month last year, according to the latest sales data report from Naamsa.

It’s also a considerable step up from the 37,107 units sold in April this year, indicating strong consumer demand for vehicles despite the troubling economic conditions the country is in the midst of.

Toyota secured top billing once again with 11,395 units sold, which is substantially more than the 9,423 purchased in the previous month, but still below March’s impressive figure of 13,406.

Likewise, Volkswagen managed to sell 5,259 units in May – effectively splitting the difference between the 6,139 sold in March and the 4,644 moved in April.

Third-place holder Suzuki managed to expand its customer base by another 3,709 units in May, continuing what has been the company’s best quarter to date.

Ford and Hyundai switched around last month, with the blue oval dropping to fifth place while the Korean automaker bumped up to fourth, though both performed well, with Hyundai managing 2,745 sales while Ford parted ways with 2,491 units.

Other brands to make it into the top 10 last month include Kia, Haval, Isuzu, Renault, and Nissan, who all achieved well over 1,500 purchases.

The report also revealed that passenger vehicles were responsible for 27,401 sales, a difference of only 0.1% compared to the same month in 2022, while light-commercial vehicles recorded a significant increase of 38.5% for the same period – going from 9,261 units to 12,825 units.

In May, an estimated 38,872 units (90.2%) came from dealership sales, while the rental industry accounted for another 2,100 units (4.9%). Another 1,164 units (2.7%) went to corporate fleets, and the government was responsible for 924 purchases (2.2%).

Exports were another big win for the local automotive industry, as they climbed 67.5% to 31,437 units, in contrast to the 19,007 units sent overseas in May 2022.
