Best-selling cars in South Africa

The Toyota Hilux was back on top as South Africa’s best-selling car in May after it was knocked off its pedestal by the Ford Ranger in April.

The Hilux sold a total of 2,798 units, whereas 2,104 customers walked away with a new Ranger.

As before, the VW Polo Vivo was a firm favourite and slid into third place by moving 1,876 cars, and the Toyota Corolla Cross also managed to maintain fourth with 1,644 sales.

From fifth place upwards the ranks have changed, with the Isuzu D-Max occupying this space and sixth going to the Toyota Hiace, these vehicles selling 1,555 and 1,553 units, respectively.

Toyota’s Starlet hatch also had a good performance of 1,218 transactions to reach seventh, and the Suzuki Swift is clinging on to the top 10 in eighth position thanks to 1,178 buyers.

Ninth is taken by the evergreen Nissan NP200 with 1,178 sales, and the VW Polo is once again in the top ranks, standing in tenth with 1,024 sales.

The Toyota Fortuner in eleventh is the final model to crack the 1,000-unit mark as it found 1,018 new owners, and twelfth to twentieth was given to the Hyundai Grand i10, Haval Jolion, Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, Renault Kiger, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Nissan Magnite, Mahindra Pik Up, VW T-Cross, and Suzuki Baleno, respectively.

Out of the overall 43,060 new-car sales in South Africa in May 2023, the top 20 accounted for 23,541 units, or a remarkable 55%, of all purchases.
