Entry-level Mercedes-Benz EQS updated for South Africa – What’s new

Mercedes-Benz has updated the entry-level model of the luxurious EQS electric sedan less than a year after it was introduced.

The electric vehicle (EV) was on the receiving end of more power and a higher level of standard specification, as well as a R48,000-bump in price.

Previously, the 450+ started at a quite substantial R2,620,500, and now, it retails from a higher R2,668,655.

What’s new

The most notable change to the EQS 450+ is the fact that it now generates 265kW and 568Nm from its rear-mounted electric motor, a noticeable improvement over the previous 245W and 565Nm.

The new model sprints to 100km/h in 6.1 seconds – down from 6.2 seconds – and still caps out at a top speed of 210km/h.

It’s also capable of driving for a total of 782km without needing to be recharged, and when the time comes, a 200kW DC fast-charging cable sees the 108kWh battery pack go from 10-80% in as little as 31 minutes.

The top-end EQS 53 was untouched during its cheaper sibling’s revisions, still developing a massive 484kW and 950Nm from its two electric engines making it the most powerful car currently sold by the luxurious German automaker.

The 53 accelerates from a standstill to 100km/h in a mere 3.8 seconds and goes up to a maximum of 220km/h, and it achieves a lower but still respectable maximum driving distance of 586km.

Both variants of the EQS also get Airmatic adaptive suspension, rear-axle steering, and the Dynamic Select drive mode programme with Comfort, Eco, Individual, and Sport settings.

Apart from the more powerful underpinnings, the EQS 450+ was the recipient of targeted feature and technology enhancements.

On top of the generous level of nice-to-haves the Mercedes already provides, buyers will now additionally get active cruise control with stop and go as well as the Rear Seat package which consists of electric outer rear seats, comfort rear armrests, “luxury” rear head restraints, and a wireless charging system for passengers being chauffeured at the back.

This is in addition to existing fitments such as electric and heated front seats, leather upholstery, four-zone climate control, ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, augmented reality navigation, automatic LED headlamps with high-beam assist, active parking assist, blind-spot assist, and lane-keep assist.

Price

The South African pricing and line-up for the Mercedes-Benz EQS are as follows:

All models are sold with a 5-year/100,000km comprehensive service and maintenance plan, a 10-year/unlimited-kilometre battery warranty, and a free Wallbox domestic charger installed at the customer’s desired location.
