South African Airways adds new international flight

South African Airways (SAA) is adding a new destination to its flight schedule, bringing the total number of overseas routes to 23.

The newest destination to be added to the recovering airliner’s line-up is Sao Paulo, Brazil, which will see flights coming to and from the South American city four times a week.

International destinations

There will be two flights every week from South Africa’s two largest airports – Cape Town International and O.R. Tambo International – with the former’s departures taking place on Tuesdays and Saturdays while the latter’s will occur on Mondays and Thursdays.

Bookings for the first flights were opened on 29 June 2023, and the first departures are scheduled to leave from Cape Town on the 31st of October, while Joburg’s will commence from the 6th of November, according to BusinessTech.

SAA will be travelling to Guarulhos International Airport, which is located roughly 25km from Sao Paulo’s city centre and is supported by taxis, buses, subway, and railway lines, as well as car hire services.

“The city serves as an exciting example of the exquisite Brazilian way of life, combining the relaxed lifestyle synonymous with Latin America with the hustle and bustle that comes with a rapidly developing economy,” said the air company.

The South American destination is the airline’s 23rd international stop, which includes the following:

  • Abidjan, Ivory Coast
  • Accra, Ghana
  • Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
  • Blantyre, Malawi
  • Cairo, Egypt
  • Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
  • Dubai, United Arab Emirates

The state-owned entity is also planning to procure six new aircraft as part of an expansion strategy that should see the inclusion of more foreign destinations in the near future.

An A330 and A320 Airbus have already been secured, and the airline has put out an order for four additional A320 units, which will be taken out on a 36-month lease, and are expected to come online from September 2023.
