N1 road closure this week – Times and dates

The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) will close off the N1 freeway between Rigel Avenue, Pretoria, and the R21 interchange, Centurion this weekend.

“This disruption is required to allow the placement of pre-cast concrete beams over the N1 national road freeway for the construction of a new bridge for the doubling of Solomon Mahlangu Drive in Erasmusrand, Pretoria,” said Alan Agaienz, Sanral northern region project manager.

Both north and southbound carriageways on the busy section of road will be partially blocked off on the following dates and times:

  • Saturday, 22 July – 05h00 to 17h00
  • Sunday, 23 July – 07h00 to 18h00

However, Agaienz notes that the closures “may need to be adjusted depending on weather conditions and other unscheduled problems on the day.”

The preliminary programme for the operation is as follows:

Traffic flow restricted

During this time, traffic flow will be restricted to two lanes in the northbound direction with intermittent full closures also to take place while the contractor places a beam over the freeway. In this case, motorists will be diverted onto the R21.

An alternative route for the northbound and southbound direction has already been identified using the R21, Solomon Mahlangu Drive, and Rigel Avenue.

“Once the beam is in place, the compulsory diversion will be removed and restricted traffic flow to two lanes will be allowed to allow congestion to subside,” said Agaienz.

“The process will be repeated through the morning and early afternoon until four (4) beams are all placed in position over the northbound carriageway.”

In the southbound direction, the flow of traffic will be reduced to two lanes for the entire operation, and Sanral has advised motorists that a “very large lifting crane” will be placed over three lanes in the southbound direction from 05h30 on Saturday morning, which will be removed after 18h00 on Sunday evening.

“Sanral apologises for the inconvenience during this period and will continue to provide updates to road users as new information becomes available,” said Agaienz.

“The Agency takes its mandate seriously from government to manage and maintain the national road network. In so doing, the safety and wellbeing of road users and the communities in which it operates are paramount.”
