Mahindra has revealed the Global Pik Up concept at its Futurescape event in Cape Town, giving fans their first peek at what its next-generation bakkie will look like.
While the Pik Up range is a best-seller for the brand in markets including South Africa and India, the next-gen model will be targeted at the global stage with a more contemporary design based on that of the Scorpio-N SUV.
“The concept represents a well-considered approach to entering newer international markets while strengthening its presence in existing ones with a range of world-class products, beginning with the Global Pik Up,” said Mahindra.
“Based on the tough and versatile new-gen ladder frame platform, the Global Pik Up promises to be one of the market’s most versatile and capable pickups when it goes into production.”
Everything we know
Thus far only being shown off in concept form, there is little we know about the Global Pik Up besides what it will look like, though it is bound to still undergo some design changes before the production-ready version is fully unveiled.
The bakkie sits on the same ladder-frame chassis as the new Scorpio-N and borrows the SUV’s headlights, too, though it has unique bumpers, grilles, wheels, and naturally, a load bed instead of a boot.
The off-roader was crafted to be a “versatile, robust, and stylish vehicle, suitable for a wide range of applications,” said Mahindra, and to that end, it offers a “substantial” cargo bed, “commendable” towing capacity, and a “practical solution for diverse tasks” such as a roof rack for storage and accessory mounts, tow hooks, a rear sports bar, and side steps.
“Whether it’s transporting a boat to the lake, moving a horse trailer, or providing storage space for essential gear, the Global Pik Up stands as a reliable option,” said the automaker.
Moreover, the new high-rider will get the all-new AdrenoX-powered infotainment and audio systems found in the Scorpio as well as Mahindra’s proprietary intelligent 4Xplore four-wheel-drive system.
Safety was a core focus in designing the Pik Up, too, the bakkie now scoring a 5-star safety rating and featuring Level 2 advanced driver assistance technologies to meet international standards.
“By adhering to the highest global and local safety standards, this pickup promises not only practicality but also peace of mind for drivers and passengers alike,” the company said.
Mahindra’s global vision
Mahindra’s Global Pik Up was built to tap into the international lifestyle pickup market and to heighten the perception of the brand’s vehicles.
“The ultimate goal is to make the pickup lifestyle accessible to a broad spectrum of consumers worldwide, democratizing the experience and establishing Mahindra as a prominent player in the global automotive landscape,” said the manufacturer.
As such, the Global Pik Up is only the first model in a range of new products aimed at positioning Mahindra as a competitive player in automotive showrooms around the globe.
The initial launch of the next-gen bakkie will therefore take place in existing markets including South Africa, Australia, Middle East and North Africa, New Zealand, and South Central Asia to “mark the first step in strengthening and expanding Mahindra’s presence,” it said.
Subsequently, markets in the ASEAN region will receive the Global Pik Up with other countries to follow in a phased approach.
