Checkers now offering cheaper car licence renewals in South Africa – For a limited time

The Shoprite Group has discounted its car licence renewal fees to R185 – down from the usual R225 – with the special offer being available from tomorrow, 1 November 2023, until 31 January 2024.

Until the deal expires, the fixed renewal fees will be as follows:

  • Admin fee – R110.25
  • Delivery fee – R74.75

“The licence fee and possible penalties are variable, and a quote will be provided once the renewal process has commenced,” said the retailer.

Motorists can opt to renew their vehicle licence online and pay either online or in-person at the Money Market counter in any of the 1,350 Shoprite, Checkers, and Usave stores nationwide, as well as at House & Home, OK Furniture, and select OK Foods franchise outlets

The lower fees are a response to the Road Traffic Management Corporation’s recent warning that over 1.04 million motorists’ vehicle licence discs were due to expire in September, and that a high number of renewals are scheduled to fall within the months of August, September, October, November, and December as an unintentional consequence of the Covid-19 lockdowns.

“With soaring living costs, times are tough for consumers. We hope to provide some relief by reducing the cost of car licence renewals and providing a hassle-free process that can be completed in just a few easy steps,” said Jean Olivier, General Manager of Financial Services at the Shoprite Group.

How it works

Shoprite said its car licence renewal process can be completed in as little as three minutes, provided you have all the correct documents on hand including a current car licence disc, a barcoded ID book or Smartcard ID, and proof of residence.

The first step is to capture the information online at My Money Market, which requires uploading a copy of your existing licence disc, a copy of your ID, your residential address, and your contact details.

Thereafter, you can opt to pay online via Computicket or in-store.

Upon receipt of the funds, the retailer will commence with the renewal process and the new disc will be couriered to your doorstep within 5-10 business days.
