Springbok World Cup Trophy Tour kicks off today – Routes and road closures in Pretoria and Joburg

In celebration of winning South Africa’s historic fourth Rugby World Cup, the Springboks have commenced with a four-day World Cup Trophy Tour that will see the team travel through the country’s major metros on their green-and-gold tour bus.

As such, there will be several road closures in Pretoria and Johannesburg today, 2 November, to allow fans to see and cheer for the star players as they make their way through the cities.

Pretoria route and road closures

The Boks’ parade will start in Pretoria at the Southern Sun Hotel on the corner of Steve Biko Road and Pretorius Street and proceed to the Union Buildings where the President will receive the trophy at 08h30.

At 09h30, the Springboks will make their way through Hatfield, Sunnyside, and Church Square, then end at Tshwane House in the Pretoria CBD at around 11h30.

At Tshwane House, the Springboks will meet the Executive Mayor of Tshwane Cilliers Brink for a congratulatory session on behalf of Tshwane residents.

From here, the open-bus parade will travel along Steve Biko Road and then turn right into Stanza Bopape Street until it reaches the Union Buildings.

From the Union Buildings, the bus will turn into Stanza Bopape Street and proceed until to End Street in Hatfield, where it will turn right into Pretorius Street, then left into Gordon Road, right into Burnett Street, and left to Park Street.

From Park Street, the Boks will make their way into Kirkness Street, pass Loftus Versfeld Stadium, and turn right into Jorissen Street in Sunnyside.

From Jorissen Street, they will proceed along the A Re Yeng bus route at Kotze Street, and then turn into Nana Sita Street and turn right into Paul Kruger Street.

They will pass by Church Square, turn right into Madiba Street, and continue until they reach Tshwane House on the corner of Madiba and Lilian Ngoyi Street.

Most streets in the CBD, Arcadia, Hatfield, and Sunnyside will be greatly impacted as the parade passes by but will be open for traffic immediately thereafter.

The main affected streets include:

  • Thabo Sehume Street

Tshwane Metro Police Department officers, SAPS, and other law enforcement agencies will be deployed to escort and monitor the parade.

Johannesburg route and road closures

Following the Pretoria parade, the Springboks will drive to Johannesburg for another city-wide tour.

Starting at 14h00, the bus will take off from Helpmekaar College on Melle Street in Braamfontein, turning right onto Ameshoff Street, right again onto Jan Smuts Avenue/Bertha Street and travel across the Nelson Mandela Bridge, turn left onto Lillian Ngoyi Street, and right onto Simmonds Street towards FNB Bank City – where the FNB CEO will give a speech from Springbok Bus roof.

The parade will then travel to Commissioner Street which becomes Main Reef Road, turn left at Nasrec Road past Riverlea and past the Johannesburg Expo Centre.

The next destination is Rand Show Road which becomes Ben Naude Street in Diepkloof, followed by a left turn onto Immink Drive and right onto Chris Hani Road travelling past Maponya Mall.

At Klipspruit Valley Road the bus will take a right, and then a left onto Kumalo Main Road in Orlando West, another left onto Vilakazi Street, and a right at Moema Street towards the Hector Pieterson Memorial.

From here, the Boks will travel down Kumalo Main Road, turning left onto Klipspruit Valley Road and right onto Soweto Highway.

The parade will then take the Shaft 17 offramp and turn right onto Nasrec Road into SAFA House Gate to FNB Stadium for a lap of honour and a keynote address by Executive Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda at 16h00.

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers, SAPS, Gauteng Traffic Police and other law enforcement agencies will be deployed to escort and monitor the parade. JMPD officers will correspondingly assist with traffic control on the victory tour route.

Motorists are urged to avoid the affected areas and are encouraged to be patient and proceed with caution as the whole nation celebrates.
