Ranger vs Hilux – This is the best-selling used car in South Africa

The Ford Ranger was the best-selling used car in South Africa in October, selling 1,790 units according to data from used-car platform AutoTrader.

In second place with a 304-unit deficit sat the Toyota Hilux, raking in 1,486 customers, narrowly edging out the VW Polo in third which scored 1,429 sales.

As a whole, sales of pre-owned autos in October grew 4% month-on-month to 32,839 units, however, despite higher sales numbers than in September, the total value of used cars sold declined by 1% to R12.66 billion – from R12.77 billion in September.

The reason for this, said AutoTrader CEO George Mienie, is a drop in the average used-car selling price.

“While used car sales grew by an additional 1,203 units in October, the average selling price dipped to R385,460, from R403,626 in September, signaling consumer affordability pressures,” said Mienie.

“Increased sales of more affordable models supports this view.”

As in previous months Toyota, VW, and Ford maintained their three positions as the top three best-selling brands, with Renault making it back into the top ten and Audi falling out.

Another notable development was that the Jeep Wrangler, which achieved sixth place in September, fell to a staggering 24th in October.
