New Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 confirmed for South Africa – Specifications

Mercedes-Benz has revealed the high-performance version of its new CLE coupe, boasting a more powerful engine with electrical assistance from a hybrid motor.

The CLE was first unwrapped in July this year as a crossroads between the fan-favourite C-Class and the luxury E-Class, and now the carmaker’s AMG division has finally pulled the covers off its sportier take on the new model.

The standard CLE is set to reach South African showrooms by mid-2024, and the company has confirmed to TopAuto that it is currently looking at a launch window between late 2024 and early 2025 for the AMG CLE 53.

Upping their game

The incoming AMG will feature a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder petrol engine which has been uprated to produce 330kW and 560Nm, and drivers are also able to temporarily raise this torque figure up to 600Nm thanks to an “overboost” function.

The petrol plant isn’t doing all the work by itself though. It is accompanied by the brand’s second-generation 48V mild-hybrid technology with an integrated starter motor that supplies 17kW and 205Nm of Overboost that assists with acceleration from a standstill as well as fuel usage, which sits at 9.3-9.7l/100km.

Also contributing to the CLE’s performance is an exhaust-gas turbocharger and electric compressor which are able to compress even more gas into the system for a better pedal response.

Thanks to this setup, the athletic Merc’ can race from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.2 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h.

Power is transmitted to the tarmac via a nine-speed automatic gearbox and a 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, which has the added benefit of rear-wheel steering for greater maneuverability and AMG Ride Control Adaptive suspension for better comfort and handling.

Owners also have access to five driving modes namely Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Individual – the latter of which allows for custom settings for things like the transmission, steering, and suspension.

As an AMG model, the CLE 53 gets a number of additional features over its standard siblings, including a set of flared wheel arches, 19-inch alloy wheels, red brake calipers, a rear spoiler, a rear diffuser, AMG badges, a Panamericana grille, and twin tailpipes.

Inside, the cabin’s main conversation starter is an 11.9-inch MBUX infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch digital driver display, but there’s also an AMG steering wheel with paddle shifters, aluminium pedals, a carbon fibre dashboard, multi-colour ambient lighting, climate control, and microfibre seats with a red contrast stitch, though these can be upgraded to AMG Sport seats in Nappa leather.

More information on the new Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 will be disclosed closer to its launch window towards the end of next year.
