Capping off a year at the top of the sales charts, the Toyota Hilux was South Africa’s best-selling vehicle in December 2023 with a solid month of 2,858 sales.
Closer than usual to the front runner, the VW Polo Vivo in second also had a good performance in December moving 2,448 units in total.
The Ford Ranger then grabbed third place by virtue of its 1,936 transactions, only just surpassing the Toyota Corolla Cross in fourth which found 1,932 buyers.
Two more Toyota models took home the fifth and sixth positions, these being the Vitz with 1,358 sales and the Hiace with 1,056.
The Isuzu D-Max came in at seventh place seeing 1,023 examples roll through showroom doors, followed by yet another Toyota, this time the Starlet, which managed to pull in 1,013 customers.
Dipping below the 1,000 mark, the Suzuki Swift ranked ninth in December’s sales charts with 967 units moved, and the Renault Triber closed out the top 10 with 901 units.
China’s Chery remains a consistent feature in the ranks and its Tiggo 4 Pro claimed the 11th spot owing to its 898 sales, with the final Toyota to make it onto the list being the Fortuner in 12th at 798 sales.
The Nissan NP200 continued to be a popular option for bakkie buyers selling 749 units last month and earning the 13th position in the process, and this was followed by two Hyundais, the i20 and Grand i10, which saw 741 and 731 purchases, respectively.
Onto number 16, the VW Polo reported 708 sales in December, the Haval H6 in 17th did 642 sales, and the Nissan Magnite in 18th did 610.
The Kia Sonet scored the 19th position with 581 registrations, and the Renault Kiger squeezed in at number 20 with 570 units sold.
Out of the aggregate 40,329 new vehicles sold in the country in December, the above models account for an impressive 22,520, or approximately 56%, of all transactions.
In 2024, Naamsa expects that South Africa’s new-vehicle sales will return to pre-pandemic levels thanks to an anticipated drop in interest rate hikes in the second half of the year, and an easing in inflation that will remove a bit of pressure from household wallets.
