Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) South Africa has announced that the new Range Rover Velar and Ranger Rover Evoque are now available to order.
The Velar has a total of eight derivatives with prices starting at R1,670,900, while the Evoque has five models with a starter price of R1,258,100.
Both vehicles can now be ordered online from JLR South Africa’s eCommerce websites or by contacting a retail agent from one of the company’s locations around the country.
What’s new
Range Rover has expanded the list of standard equipment found on both SUVs, starting with a new set of super-slim Pixel LED headlights and daytime running lights.
The interior has received a new floating 11.4-inch curved glass touchscreen display, which is positioned to be within the driver’s eye-line and provides access to all of the car’s key functions.
The screen also has the added benefit of freeing up dashboard space for better storage, and a new wireless charging pad. The infotainment screen runs on the brand’s latest Pivi Pro operating system and is capable of receiving regular Over The Air software updates, too.
The revised Velar and Evoque further have the option of a leather-free cabin with tactile materials like Ultrafabric and Kvadrat textiles for the seats on offer.
The Evoque can now also be specced with the Cabin Air Purification Plus system that is already an option on the Velar, either through the purchase of the optional Comfort Pack or as standard on the Autobiography trim.
Engine selection
The combined SUV line-up has five powertrains at its disposal, starting with the D200 – a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel with 146kW and 430Nm.
The Evoque D200 is the only model in the group to connect to a nine-speed automatic gearbox and averages 5.8l/100km on a combined fuel consumption, while every other Range Rover uses an eight-speed box, with the Velar D200 using a fractionally higher 5.9l/100km.
The Evoque also has access to a P300e plug-in hybrid (PHEV), which uses a 1.5-litre petrol block in tandem with an 80kW electric motor and a 14.9kWh battery to achieve a combined output of 227kW and 540Nm.
This consumes just 2.0/100km provided you make extensive use of its electric-only driving which is good for 62km, with an 80% charge taking anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours depending on whether a 50kW rapid DC or a 7kW AC plug is used.
The Velar, meanwhile, can be fitted with the D300 3.0-litre, turbo-diesel configuration producing 221kW and 650Nm and averaging 7.3l/100km; or the P340 3.0-litre, turbo-petrol that generates 250kW and 450Nm while consuming 8.7l/100km.
Finally, there’s the P400e PHEV, which combines a 2.0-litre, turbo-petrol drivetrain with an 85kW e-motor and a 14kWh battery to produce 297kW and 640Nm.
This setup allows for 50km of electric driving and takes roughly the same amount of time to charge as the P300e with both a DC and AC cable.
Every vehicle in the selection boasts an intelligent torque-on-demand all-wheel-drive system, which provides the optimum torque distribution to suit a variety of conditions from dynamic road driving to pulling away on wet surfaces.
