Mitsubishi has expanded the Outlander family in South Africa with three fresh models comprising the new entry-level GL specification, the new mid-range GLS Plus, and the new flagship Exceed.
As a result, the Outlander is now available in five variants from a starting price of R699,995 – which is a welcome R60,000 lower than before.
“The expansion of the Outlander range will allow more South Africans to get behind the wheel of this exciting vehicle by offering exceptional value for money across a wider variety of models, fitted with the equipment that meets the exacting requirements of our modern customers,” said Jeffrey Allison, general manager of marketing at Mitsubishi Motors South Africa.
What you get
The GL is the new entry point into the Outlander range and it boasts a substantial level of standard specification to remain competitive in the densely populated SUV segment.
The most affordable version of the seven-seater is delivered with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime-running lights, push-button start, a 7-inch digital driver’s display, an 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated seats, synthetic leather/suede upholstery, cruise control, a rear-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, hill-start assist, hill-descent control, an emergency stop system, and seven airbags.
One step up, equipment on the GLS continues with 20-inch wheels, automatic headlights with a washer system, front LED turn signals and LED fog lamps, rain-sensing wipers, keyless entry, a bigger 12.3-inch driver’s cluster, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, three-zone climate control, a rear USB port, and an electric tailgate.
The GLS Plus then builds on its namesake with the addition of an around-view camera programme.
The penultimate Aspire trim bolsters the Mitsubishi’s comfort and convenience levels with a powered panoramic sunroof, door mirrors with position memory, eight-way power-adjustable front seats with lumbar support and a memory function, full leather upholstery, and a larger 9-inch central screen providing integrated navigation
At the top, the new pinnacle Exceed variant comes complete with a wireless smartphone charger, a Bose Premium sound system with 10 speakers, door mirrors with position memory and reverse auto tilt, and a pull-up sunshade.
All Outlander derivatives feature the same powertrain taking the form of a 2.5-litre, naturally-aspirated petrol mill producing 135kW and 245Nm married to a “simulated” eight-speed CVT transmission.
The configuration transmits drive to all four wheels via Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control system; with Eco, Normal, Tarmac, Gravel, Snow, and Mud drive modes also being available to adjust power delivery according to the situation at hand.
Fuel consumption for the SUV registers an average of 8.1l/100km and it can reach a top speed of 187km/h.
For the more practically-inclined buyer, the Outlander’s maximum towing capacity is pegged at 1,600kg and it has a cargo volume of 205 litres with all seven seats up, 694 litres in five-seater mode, and 1,461 litres with only the front seats erected.
