Best-selling cars in South Africa

Toyota carried the momentum it ended 2023 with into the new year, as the Hilux was once again South Africa’s best-selling vehicle for the first month of 2024 despite a depressed few weeks in the market.

The Hilux claimed first with a tally of 2,645 units sold, a decent margin above second place’s VW Polo Vivo which saw 2,034 purchases, with these being the only two vehicles to eclipse the 2,000 mark.

In third sat the evergreen Ford Ranger with 1,914 models moved, trailed by the Toyota Corolla Cross with its 1,660 sales scoring it the fourth position.

The Suzuki Swift in fifth continued its strong showing and garnered 1,566 new customers during the month, while sixth once again went to Toyota, this time the Starlet, which had 1,479 buyers.

Coming in at seventh, the Isuzu D-Max ended January with 1,336 sales, the Toyota Hiace followed with 1,229, and the VW Polo was the last vehicle to get over 1,000 – surpassing the landmark by 79 units.

The Toyota Fortuner only just pipped the Nissan NP200 by a mere five vehicles to secure the last spot in the top 10, the former seeing 974 registrations and the latter 969.

In 12th, the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro sold 914 units, while the Nissan Magnite in 13th did 843 and the Hyundai Grand i10 in 14th did 783.

Two Suzukis occupied the 15th and 16th positions, these being the Ertiga which raked in 657 customers followed by the Baleno which gained a slightly lower 625.

Two Toyotas were next, the Vitz landing up in 17th with its 622 units sold and the Urban Cruiser in 18th with its 589.

Closing out the top 20 were the Mahindra Pik Up and Haval Jolion which saw a total of 578 and 567 purchases, respectively.

Out of the 41,636 new vehicles sold in the local market last month, the top-selling models accounted for 23,063 units thereof, a slice of just over 55%.
