New Toyota Land Cruiser 79 launched in South Africa – Pricing and specifications

Toyota has launched the new Land Cruiser (LC) 79 in South Africa with eight models on offer spanning single (SC) and double-cab (DC) body styles.

The SC derivatives are available from a starting price of R765,500 while the DC models retail from R864,600.

The facelifted bakkies boast modernised styling, a more refined cabin, and most notably, a new diesel-powered engine option.

Standard features

The main difference between the various LC79 models comes down to their choice of engine, as the vehicles all offer nearly identical spec sheets.

For the single cabs, standard equipment across the range comprises new 16-inch alloy wheels, front LED fog lamps, remote central locking, vinyl seats, manual airconditioning, electric windows, two speakers, a 12V power outlet, two airbags, and ABS.

The two range-toppers – the V8 and 2.8GD-6 – additionally come with fabric upholstery, interior carpets, and wooden steering wheel inserts; while only the V8 gets a snorkel, a plated front bumper, aluminium side steps, and “LX” badging.

The new 2.8GD-6 variant with its automatic gearbox further boasts a suite of safety systems including brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution, hill-assist control, downhill assist, traction control, and vehicle stability control.

The double cabs are slightly more luxurious than the SC counterparts as they get fabric seats in all models, while the V8 and 2.8GD-6 bring fitments such as a leather steering wheel and a touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth, navigation, and a USB port.

Engine options

As before, the LC79 range is available with an assortment of engines which has been bolstered by a new 2.8-litre, turbo-diesel option badged the GD-6.

All versions of the Toyota are equipped with a selectable 4×4 system and front and rear differential locks, and depending on the body style, maximum payload capacity ranges anywhere from 920kg to 1,225kg.

In terms of their physical dimensions, the LC79 bakkies measure 5,235mm long, 1,870mm wide, and 1,945mm tall (1,955mm for the SC) with a wheelbase of 3,180mm and ground clearance of 235mm.

Their approach and departure angles come in at 33 and 27 degrees, respectively.
