VW has announced that the new Touareg will launch in South Africa on 1 August from a starting price of R1,457,900.
The Touareg is the first of four new VW vehicles headed to our roads over the next few months, the others being the facelifted Polo Vivo, updated T-Cross, and next-generation Tiguan.
What’s new
The new Touareg benefits from a selection of targeted cosmetic upgrades to bring its exterior design up-to-date with the rest of the fresh-faced VW stable.
The SUV sees a redesigned grille flanked by new IQ.Light HD Matrix headlights with three LED modules and three L-shaped LEDs for the daytime running lights.
There is now also an illuminated LED strip that extends from both sides of the VW badge on the nose, as well as a restyled front bumper that strikes a more aggressive appearance.
At the back, the tailgate features an edge-to-edge LED light strip matching the one at the front, new taillight signatures, and a VW logo illuminated in red, as well as a revised rear bumper.
An updated selection of model-specific alloy wheels of between 19 and 21 inches completes the enhancements.
In South Africa, the Touareg will be sold in Elegance and R-Line specifications.
New equipment in both variants of the premium SUV comprises improved voice recognition, upgraded USB-C connections with a 45W charging capacity (up from 15W), electrically adjustable leather seats, and 30-colour ambient lighting with three illumination zones.
There is also a revised 12-inch digital driver’s display sitting next to a 15-inch central touchscreen with improved navigation functions.
“In addition, by evaluating customer feedback, the high-quality level of the Touareg interior has been further improved,” said VW.
“For example, the centre console trims are now softer than before, providing extra comfort.”
The selection of optional extras has also been expanded, now including Travel Assist which provides assisted driving up to maximum speed, Area View which assists with checking blind spots when parking, and Night Vision which helps keep the car on the road when the sun sets.
Like the outgoing Touareg, the newcomer is driven by a 3.0-litre, V6, turbocharged diesel engine generating a hefty 190kW and 600Nm.
Each variant boasts permanent all-wheel drive courtesy of VW’s 4Motion system and gear shifts are taken care of by an eight-speed automatic transmission.
