2 new VW Polo Vivo models coming to South Africa – Details

VW recently announced its product lineup for the year, including two new models for the Polo Vivo.

The popular hatchback will receive two additional variants, the Edition 15 and the Xpress, in the third quarter of 2025.

What to expect

Starting with the Edition, this will be a commemorative model intended to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the locally made Vivo badge, which has sold over 425,000 units since its debut in 2010.

The Edition 15’s name is not just a reference to the car’s history, however, as it is being limited to a production run of just 1,500 units.

Boosting its exclusivity is the fact that the company has added a number of cosmetic details to make the small car stand out on the road.

Thus far, VW has confirmed that the 15 will be sold in one of two colours – Crystal Blue Pearl or Deep Black Pearl – along with a contrasting black roof.

The look will be further enhanced by a set of bespoke 15-inch Adelaide machined-alloy wheels, black mirror caps and door pillars, and unique Edition 15 logos and accents on the doors and bonnet.

The changes to the interior are more modest, with Edition 15 branded scuff plates greeting owners when they open the doors.

Bear in mind that the Edition is based on the facelifted Vivo launched in August last year, which means the spec sheet also includes things like new seats, a multifunction steering wheel, and a 9-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Volkswagen has yet to reveal the powertrain details for the new model, so it is currently unclear which of the three Polo engines it will receive.

As a reminder, the Vivo is currently sold with the following petrol drivetrains:

  • 1.4-litre – 55kW/130Nm
  • 1.6-litre – 77kW/153Nm
  • 1.0-litre turbo – 81kW/200Nm

Pricing for the Edition will be revealed closer to its launch window in Q3.

The other model heading our way this year is the Xpress – which is a returning badge for the Vivo series.

The Xpress is a commercial variant of the hatchback that strips away the back seats in favour of a significantly expanded boot, similar to what Hyundai and Kia have done with the Grand i10 Cargo and the Picanto Runner, respectively.

It’s a sub-genre of vehicles that has seen rapidly growing interest over the last few years, owing to how affordable workhorses are now few and far between.

The Xpress is based on the entry-level Vivo, meaning it ships with a 1.4-litre engine and a five-speed manual gearbox.

As mentioned, the back bench has been stripped away to make room for a reinforced storage area that can take up to 490kg, which has a mesh-pattern steel partition behind the front seats to protect the occupants from loose objects and to secure cargo.

The floor is flat to make it easier to load objects, and the rear doors can still be opened in case you need to reach something at the back of the load bin.

Pricing will only be revealed at a later date, but if the i10 and Picanto are anything to go by, the Xpress will likely slot between the base Vivo and the Life models, putting its sticker somewhere between R271,900 and R294,300.
