The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has notified motorists of new recalls for vehicles from seven different brands in South Africa.
The recalls affect autos made by Audi, Chrysler, Citroen, Jeep, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and VW.
Audi e-tron GT
Audi is recalling the all-electric e-tron GT sports car due to a potential fault in the high-voltage battery.
Some individual cell modules of the battery pack may display technical irregularities, which could lead to overheating which presents an acute fire hazard.
This poses a risk of “severe fatal injuries to people inside and/or outside the vehicle, as well as significant property damage,” said Audi.
A total of 46 vehicles produced from 27 October 2021 onwards have been identified as being potentially affected by the issue.
Consumers are urged to submit their cars to any Audi South Africa-approved dealer for checking and, if necessary, replacement of the module.

Chrysler 300C
Stellantis South Africa is recalling the Chrysler 300C as part of the ongoing Takata airbag campaign.
According to the company, “the passenger airbag inflator may rupture due to excessive internal pressure during normal airbag deployment events.”
“In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could strike the vehicle occupants, which may result in serious injury or death.”
These vehicles were made available for sale from 2014 to 2016.
Consumers are required to visit their nearest authorised Stellantis dealer for a repair or replacement of the airbag.

Citroen C4, DS4, and DS5
Stellantis South Africa is recalling all Citroen C4, DS4, and DS5 models distributed in the country between 2009 and 2016.
These vehicles are being recalled for possible problems with the driver and passenger airbag inflator that may cause it to rupture during the airbag deployment phase.
“The potentially high energetic deployment of the inflator may lead to metal fragments detaching from the bursting inflator, and these parts could fly in the direction of the driver or occupants in the vehicle,” said Stellantis.
This could lead to serious injuries or possibly death in a worst-case scenario.
Owners of affected vehicles should take them to an authorised Stellantis dealer for a repair or replacement of the component.

Jeep Wrangler
Stellantis is recalling the Jeep Wrangler, sold from 2014 to 2016, for the same Takata airbag issue as the Chrysler 300C.
“The passenger airbag inflator may rupture due to excessive internal pressure during normal airbag deployment events,” said the manufacturer.
“In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could strike the vehicle occupants, which may result in serious injury or death.”
Once again, owners are urged to visit their nearest authorised Stellantis dealer for a repair or replacement of the airbag.

Mercedes-Benz CLA and S-Class
Mercedes-Benz is recalling both the CLA (c118) and S-Class (w223) as the design of their brake hoses could lead to problems down the line.
For the CLA, the length of the brake hoses on the rear axle might cause them to come into contact with surrounding components, chafe over time, and consequently leak fluid.
This will lead to reduced braking performance in one of the two brake circuits, increasing the risk of an accident caused by the fluid loss.
For the S-Class, the brake hoses on the front axle may gradually start to leak in hot and moist areas after an extended operating period.
“As a result, the brake fluid could leak out, impairing brake power in one of the two brake circuits, increasing the risk of an accident,” said Mercedes.
The recalled vehicles were produced between 2020 and 2023 for both the CLA and S-Class.
Owners are advised to take their cars to the nearest Mercedes-Benz-approved outlet for remedies.

Volvo
Volvo has initiated a recall for 27 units of the XC90 SUV sold from 2020 to 2022 due to a potential issue with the high-voltage battery.
As per Volvo, the defect may lead to overheating of the battery cells when the battery is fullly charged.
The overheating may lead to a “thermal event” in extreme cases, it said.
Consumers with affected XC90s are requested to book their vehicles into the nearest approved agents or dealerships for a check and potential replacement of components where necessary.

VW
VW is recalling the Polo Sedan owing to the latch plates for the rear seatbelts being produced with insufficient hardness.
Therefore, in the event of an accident or hard braking, there “may be a reduced retention or protective effect and related increased risk of injury,” said VW.
A considerable 905 vehicles sold from 2 April 2025 onwards have been identified as part of the recall.
Affected consumers are urged to contact an approved VW dealer for a check and, if necessary, replacement of the affected components.
