New Mitsubishi Pajero Sport launched at old price in South Africa

The new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is officially on sale in South Africa, boasting revised looks, a “remastered” cockpit, and additional safety and convenience features.

The seven-seater is now available in three specifications – down from six – which are “positioned to deliver maximum value to customers without compromising on its unrivalled quality and legendary off-road DNA,” said Mitsubishi.

Despite the new additions to the SUV, its starting price remained unchanged at R789,990 as Mitsubishi is well aware of the increasingly price-sensitive market.

Pajero Sport specs

The latest evolution of the Pajero Sport was on the receiving end of a new Dynamic Shield front grille that offers a more assertive presence than the versions of old.

Redesigned front and rear under garnishes complement the updated front fascia, and completing the revisions are updated 18-inch alloy wheels in a “modern SUV design.”

Once inside, you’ll see a new 8-inch fully digital driver’s display behind a redesigned multifunction steering wheel wrapped in leather that provides a more modern and tactical driving feel.

A new black ceiling headliner has also been added to enhance the cabin’s appeal.

All variants of the updated Pajero Sport are equipped with black leather seats, dual-zone climate control with rear vents, and an 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Other equipment highlights include dusk-sensing LED headlights with auto levelling, LED daytime running lights, rain-sensing wipers, keyless entry and start, a sunroof, and an electronic tailgate.

Safety and assistance systems now comprise rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, cruise control, hill-start assist, trailer stability assist, ABS with emergency brake assist, and seven airbags.

As part of the upgrade, the Pajero Sport has also gained the Ultrasonic Mis-acceleration Mitigation System which ensures added safety in tight spaces by preventing accidental acceleration at low speeds.

The Mitsubishi remains powered by the brand’s well-known turbocharged 2.4-litre diesel plant.

The unit churns out 133kW and 430Nm which is sent to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The SUV can be bought in 4×2 and 4×4 configurations, both of which report an average fuel consumption of 8.1l/100km.

The 4×2 supports a maximum braked towing capacity of 2,700kg while the 4×4 improves this number ever so slightly to 2,850kg.

Moreover, the 4×4 benefits from the Super Select 4WD-II system with four selectable off-road functions including 2H, 4H, 4H with centre diff locked, and 4L with centre diff locked.

Further included on these models are Gravel, Mud/Snow, Sand, and Rock drive programmes, as well as hill-descent control.

Ground clearance for the Adventure SUV is pegged at 218mm, and its approach, break-over, and departure angles come in at 30, 23.1, and 24.2 degrees, respectively.
