Best-selling hatchbacks in South Africa

The VW Polo Vivo was the best-selling hatchback in South Africa in June 2025.

Last month saw a solid turnout from the nation’s smallest vehicle type, racking up thousands of sales across multiple brands.

The Vivo came in first place with 1,962 units, placing well ahead of its main rival – the Suzuki Swift.

The Swift fell down to third place with 1,466 units, allowing the Hyundai Grand i10 to move to the second spot with its 1,484 purchases.

Outside of the top three, the Toyota Starlet saw a lot of interest with 852 consumers picking one up in June.

This was followed by another Toyota – the Vitz – in fifth place with 794 sales.

The Vivo’s upmarket sibling, the VW Polo, then placed sixth with 756 units, while the Renault Kwid came seventh with 597 units making their way off the showroom floor.

Two more Suzuki models filled in the eighth and ninth spots, with the S-Presso selling 379 units while the Baleno moved 360 units.

Last but not least is the Hyundai i20, which closed out the top 10 with 278 purchases.

In total, the top 10 hatchbacks sold a combined 8,928 units, accounting for 18.87% of the 47,294 cars sold in South Africa over the last 30 days.
