BAIC has announced that the new B30 will make its public debut before the end of the month.
The B30 is slated to appear at this year’s Festival of Motoring, which is once again being held at the Kyalami Circuit in Gauteng.
“As the country’s premier automotive showcase, the festival will provide the stage for the public’s very first look at the all-new BAIC B30, which will officially launch in South Africa later this year,” said the company.
“With the arrival of the B30, BAIC is broadening its offering to meet the needs of even more local drivers, reinforcing its momentum as one of the fastest-growing names in the industry.”
A new off-road SUV
The B30 has been confirmed for our market since September 2024, and is set to become the brand’s second off-road SUV next to the B40 Plus.
Over in China, it’s known as the BJ30, but it’ll be called the B30 in South Africa for what should hopefully be obvious reasons.
It is 4,730mm long, 1,910mm wide, and 1,790mm tall, making it slightly larger than the B40.
It also has a wheelbase of 2,820mm, and a ground clearance of 215mm.
Furthermore, the BAIC has an approach angle of 24.5 degrees, breakover angle of 21 degrees, and departure angle of 30 degrees.
In other markets, the SUV is sold in hybrid and non-hybrid guises – both of which make use of a 1.5-litre petrol engine.
The non-hybrid turbocharged models produce 138kW and 305Nm, which is sent down to all four wheels via a seven-speed automatic gearbox.
The electrified units, on the other hand, pair the combustion engine with an e-motor, resulting in a greater output of 301kW and 685Nm.
BAIC has yet to disclose the car’s spec sheet, but if the Chinese models are anything to go by, customers can expect features like a 10.25-inch digital driver display, a 14.6-inch infotainment screen, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, heated and ventilated front seats, keyless entry and start, a wireless charger, a heated steering wheel, and a panoramic sunroof.
The 4×4 also comes with a driving mode selector with settings for Normal, Eco, and Sport, as well as terrain settings for Mud, Sand, and Off-Road.
Other selling points include a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot alert, lane-keep assist, and tyre-pressure monitoring, depending on the trim level.
Another point of interest is that the B30’s front seats can be folded flat, creating a surface large enough for a 1.8-metre-tall adult to lie down, making it a sleeping option for users on a camping trip.
