VW has finally revealed the pricing and launch date for the highly anticipated Golf 8.5 GTI.
The 8.5 is the mid-life facelift for the current-generation Golf, which saw the introduction of the more mass-market 1.4-litre TSI units back in April.
Interestingly, Volkswagen stated that the new version will be a limited-edition model, as only 300 examples will be allowed into local showrooms.
The Golf 8.5 GTI is now available to order online ahead of the vehicle’s official launch window in November this year, and prices start at R908,000.
For context, the Golf 8 GTI currently retails for R853,400, while the flagship Golf 8 R starts at R1,016,600.
What to expect
Petrolheads will be happy to know that VW has not simply updated the visuals for this latest take on the Golf, as the engine has been uprated to produce even more power.
The 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol plant now develops an impressive 195kW – 15kW more than the Golf 8.
Sadly, the torque figure is unchanged at 370Nm, but this is still more than enough to ensure that the hot hatch can make quick work of any race track.
The GTI can sprint from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.9 seconds, and it is electronically limited to a top speed of 250km/h.
Power is sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox with a limited slip differential, and the driving experience is complemented by a sport exhaust.
It now sits atop a set of 19-inch “Queenstown” diamond-turned alloy wheels, and the front end distinguishes itself with a pair of lower fog lamps comprised of five bulbs arranged in a checkered flag formation.
LED headlights and a horizontal daytime running light strip are a given, and the new Golf benefits from the illuminated VW logo we’ve seen on other recent models like the Tayron.
It also as a new set of LED taillights at the back.
Inside, the automaker has completely redesigned the hardware and software of the infotainment system.
The screen now runs on a fourth-generation modular operating system, and the user interface has been greatly improved by the addition of new graphics and a new layout for the controls.
The display itself now measures 12.9 inches in size and stands above the dashboard like a tablet.
Improvements have been made to the Sports seats, too, which are now wrapped in Vienna leather with integrated head restrains.
Red decorative stitching can be found on the seats, centre armrest, floor mats, and the steering wheel.
The multifunction Sport steering wheel has perforated leather at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions for a more comfortable grip, while the 6 o’clock trim has GTI lettering with red accents.
Another exclusive detail is the GTI stop/start button, which pulses red after the doors are opened until the engine is started.
The cabin also has stainless steel pedals and a black headliner.
The new VW Golf 8.5 GTI will officially go on sale in South Africa in November 2025.
