The VW Polo Vivo was the hatchback of choice for South African motorists in August 2025, selling a grand total of 2,314.
The Vivo was so popular, in fact, that it was the third best-selling vehicle in the country last month, only losing out to the Toyota Hilux bakkie and the Toyota Corolla Cross SUV.
Of course, several other hatchbacks put in a good performance, starting with the Suzuki Swift.
The Swift moved 2,101 units last month, putting it right on the Vivo’s tail.
Third place then went to the Hyundai Grand i10, which sold 1,301 units.
This was followed by the Toyota Starlet with 1,160 units, and the Toyota Vitz with 855 units.
Looking past the top five, we have the VW Polo in sixth place with 763 sales, and the Renault Kwid in seventh place with 562 purchases.
A pair of Suzuki models took the next two spots, namely the Baleno and the S-Presso, which found 500 and 433 customers in August, respectively.
Last but not least is the Hyundai i20, which rounded out the top 10 with 314 sales.
In total, the top 10 hatchbacks sold a combined 10,333 units, accounting for 19.91% of the 51,880 new cars sold in South Africa.
