BMW recalls over 12,000 cars in South Africa

BMW has issued a recall for more than 12,000 cars in South Africa.

The German carmaker’s local division recently informed the National Consumer Commission (NCC) of a recall that applies to a total of 12,491 models sold from 2016 onwards.

According to the manufacturer, multiple issues have been detected with the starter motor found in several model lines, which present a potential safety risk that compromises the integrity of the vehicle.

The recall applies to the following models sold since 2016:

  • BMW 3 Series (G20)
  • BMW 4 Series (G22)
  • BMW 5 Series (G30)
  • BMW X3 (G01)
  • BMW X4 (G02)
  • BMW Z4 (G29)

“According to BMW, their product controls and customer complaints have shown that in the identified vehicles, water can enter the starter motor at certain points and cause corrosion,” said the NCC.

It warned that the the issue may prevent the vehicle’s engine from starting, and that there is a possibility of a short circuit that could lead to the the starter motor overheating.

In a worst-case scenario, a thermal event could result in a vehicle fire, posing a serious danger even when the car is parked.

BMW has warned motorists to avoid driving through deep water that could submerge the starter motor.

Furthermore, it warned that vehicles kept in wet conditions for an extended period are at higher risk of encountering thermal problems, presenting a risk to individuals and property.

Affected customers are advised to contact their nearest authorized BMW dealership to take their car in for a service, where the staff will replace the starter motor free of charge.

Owners can also monitor their in-car communication or check BMW’s service portal to see whether their model is affected by the recall.

Another one for the count

BMW’s notice is the latest in an increasingly long list of recalls that have hit South Africa this year.

Ford has issued several recalls affecting every model in its past and present catalogue, from the Mustang and EcoSport to the Ranger and Everest.

VW has also had to call back several vehicles this year, including the Polo, Polo Sedan, Golf, and Taigo.

Other luxury brands have notified the NCC, too, as Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar Land Rover both recalled vehicles vehicles a few months ago.

Audi recalled the e-tron, and Citroen, Jeep, and Volvo have all run into issues as well.
