New Chinese bakkie launched in South Africa – Pricing and features

Changan has officially launched in South Africa, marking the arrival of a new bakkie called the Hunter.

The Hunter is one of four new vehicles the Chinese automaker has brought to our market alongside the Alsvin sedan, CS75 Pro SUV, and the Deepal S07 electric crossover.

Of course, the Hunter is arguably the star attraction, considering our bakkie-centric market, and this new model is now on sale in two specifications with prices starting at R449,900.

Right now, the lineup consists of two diesel units, but Changan will add a flagship model in November that features a range-extender electric vehicle (REEV) powertrain.

The company stated that the REEV is expected to start at R799,900, but this will be confirmed once it goes on sale.

Performance

The two models you can pick up right now are the CS and CE, which are powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine generating 110kW and 350Nm.

The entry-level CS is rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and uses a six-speed manual gearbox, while the CE has a four-wheel-drive (4WD) system, a rear differential lock, and a six-speed automatic shifter with a low-range setting.

Fuel consumption works out to an average of 7.8l/100km and 9.1l/100km for the RWD and 4WD units, respectively.

Combined with an 80-litre tank, the thirstier option has a range of 879km while the more frugal choice can manage up to 1,026km.

The Changan can also tow up to 2,000kg, and haul 1,100kg in the load bin.

As for its dimensions, the vehicle is 5,330mm long, 1,930mm wide, and 1,875mm tall.

The wheelbase is 3,180mm long, and it has 226mm of ground clearance.

Another interesting fact about the Hunter is that it shares a platform with the Peugeot Landtrek, as the two vehicles were co-developed by Stellantis and Changan.

Features

The CS comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, aluminium side steps, front and rear mud guards, a bash plate, a full-size steel spare wheel, and central locking.

Inside you’ll find manually adjustable front seats, fabric upholstery, a multifunction steering wheel, automatic air conditioning, a cooled glove box, three USB ports, four speakers, a 4.2-inch driver display, and a 10-inch infotainment screen with smartphone mirror link.

Additionally, the Changan is fitted with driving and safety features such as cruise control, rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, tyre pressure monitoring, electronic stability control, hill start and descent control, traction control, and four airbags.

Upgrading to the CE will then add larger 18-inch alloys, an alloy spare wheel, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, chrome door handles, roof rails, stainless steel side steps, keyless entry and start, leather upholstery, electric front seats with lumbar support, two more speakers (six total), and two more airbags (six total).
