Spanish airline, Air Europa, has announced that it will start offering South Africans the opportunity to fly to and from Madrid, starting from the final week of June.
The airline has been in the air since 1986, and is a member of the SkyTeam alliance, which includes notable international airlines Air France, Delta Air Lines, and the world’s most on-time airline, Aeroméxico.
Air Europa has already started selling tickets along this route, with its first flights scheduled to arrive at the O.R. Tambo International Airport on 24 June, and departures scheduled for the day after.
Return flights are already scheduled, and South Africans are able to book flights aboard the Spanish airline’s fleet of modern aircraft.
Air Europa boasts one of the most modern and sustainable air fleets in the industry, made up of 59 aircraft.
Amongst its fleet are several Boeing 787 Dreamliners and Boeing 737 models, guaranteeing the airline maximum efficiency and its passengers tremendous comfort.
The airline prides itself on a commitment to sustainability and is dedicated to innovation through the incorporation of cutting-edge technologies for the digitalisation and optimisation of its processes.
As a result, Air Europa consistently ranks amongst the most punctual airlines in Europe.
The airline currently flies to more than 55 destinations worldwide and is based at a strategic hub within the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, which connects travellers to Europe, the Americas and beyond.
Air Europa’s decision to add Johannesburg to its list of flight destinations is part of its strategy to advance international growth and expansion, adding new destinations that extend its reach to customers.
The airline says the connection to Johannesburg will open up numerous possibilities for travellers, and calls the city the main economic and financial centre of the African continent.
Air Europa will continue its expansion in Africa by offering flights into Tunisia and Morocco at a later stage.
Tickets already on sale

The airline announced it will be offering three weekly flights to Madrid, notably on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with flights returning on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Return flights will set travellers back upwards of R12,000 and more per person, depending on the date of booking and flight class.
Those who wish to make use of the airline’s first flight out of Johannesburg on 25 June for a week in Madrid can expect to pay just over R11,000 for a return ticket, thanks to “economy lite” offerings.
Flights to and from Madrid will be undertaken aboard Air Europa’s fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, an efficient choice for the airline.
“This model, one of the most advanced and efficient in its class, not only reduces fuel consumption and emissions by up to 25%, but is also designed to make flying more comfortable,” the airline said.
“In addition, they feature an exclusive Business Class with seats that convert into two-meter beds and an onboard culinary experience created by chef Martín Berasategui.”
Commenting on the new route, Air Europa declared Johannesburg “the continent’s main air hub,” which provides access to major destinations of great tourist interest.
“Thanks to its role as a business centre, the city is a key destination for business travellers, particularly in sectors such as infrastructure, mining, energy, and financial services,” it said.
“It also serves as a perfect gateway to South Africa’s immense scenic beauty, which attracts a growing number of tourists from around the world.”
While the flight destination holds significant benefits for European travellers, increasing incoming travel and investment, South African travellers will benefit as well.
The new flight route will increase access into Europe for local travellers, opening yet another gateway for international travel.
