Most popular used Chinese cars in South Africa – With pricing

Chinese automakers are rapidly gaining popularity in South Africa’s new-car market, with brands like Chery, GWM, and Jetour now featuring among the country’s top 10 selling brands.

While many of these brands have only been in South Africa for a few years, Chinese brands are also starting to gain traction in the used market as the first wave of models introduced here trickles down to second-hand buyers.

“Chinese OEMs have learned how to narrow the gap between cost and perceived value, delivering around 80% of the consumer experience at roughly 60% of the price of traditional players,” said George Mienie, CEO of AutoTrader.

“By focusing on tangible performance and visible benefits rather than legacy branding, they have capitalised on a shift in consumer behaviour. As buyers become more informed and discerning, brand loyalty is weakening, replaced by an expectation for high-quality products that clearly justify every rand spent.”

According to AutoTrader, the most popular pre-owned Chinese car is the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, which sold 3,144 units in 2025 at an average price of R284,779.

That works out to 262 units per month, which are typically 2 years old with 21,970km on the odometer.

Unsurprisingly, the Chery’s biggest rival, the Haval Jolion, came second with 2,736 sales, fetching a higher price of R319,259 with a higher mileage of 35,826km.

The GWM P-Series, a fairly popular bakkie, came third with 1,893 units, and the midsize Haval H6 SUV came fourth with 1,501 units.

Rounding out the top five is the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro, which cleared 1,098 sales.

The oldest entry on the list, the discontinued 6-year-old Haval H2, landed the sixth spot with 1,063 units, while the much newer Omoda C5 came seventh with 806 purchases.

Another bakkie – the GWM Steed 5 – secured eighth place with 789 units, which was followed by Chery’s range-topping Tiggo 8 Pro SUV with 740 sales.

The last model to crack the top 10 was the Haval Jolion Pro, which sold 712 units.
