New VW T-Roc announced for South Africa – What to expect

Wolfsburg’s auto giant VW has confirmed that the all-new T-Roc midsize SUV is due to land on our shores in the second half of the year.

The second generation of the popular offering also promises to be bigger than its previous iteration, and slot in snugly between the Taigo and Tiguan, as it has in the past.

VW declared its decision to renew the model is based on its popularity, saying that the T-Roc has gone on to establish itself as one of the brand’s most successful models since its introduction in 2020.

“The five-seater SUV all-rounder has the potential to further build on its position within the brand, the group and the wider competitive environment,” VW said.

VW is yet to announce pricing for the latest-generation T-Roc, but has announced a range of new features to set it apart from its older siblings.

It was revealed, however, that the new SUV will be offered in both Life and R-Line derivatives.

What to expect

The incoming T-Roc will be the third SUV built on the latest stage of VW’s modular platform, the MQB evo, which is available in the latest generation Tiguan and Tayron.

This system features an upgraded electronic architecture, allowing for advanced infotainment systems and highly digital cockpits.

The modular nature of the MQB evo also allows for a range of powertrains, which include both mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid options.

Thanks to this, VW hopes the SUV will be a standout offering with a new level of technology for its segment.

VW announced that the new T-Roc will also share the popular turbocharged 1.4-litre powertrain found in both the Tiguan and Tayron. It will also adopt the seven-speed Tiptronic gearbox from its bigger siblings.

This configuration will allow the SUV to send 110kW and 250Nm to its driven front wheels.

The new T-Roc will also be bigger, with VW confirming valuable extra millimetres, allowing for the five-seater to be even more family-friendly than before.

At 4,373mm, the new generation will be exactly 122mm longer than its predecessor, while its wheelbase has also increased by 28mm, and now spans 2,631mm.

In this iteration, VW also decided it was time to increase its wheel size from 19 to 20 inches.

As a longer vehicle, VW redesigned its overall look to appear more dynamic by featuring a striking silver stripe that extends from its A-pillar to the D-Pillar, and a more muscular design of its rear wheel arches.

A brand new set of LED headlights has been fitted to the T-Roc, featuring LED Plus headlights as standard, or VW’s IQ.Light LED headlights as optional extras.

Both the front and rear VW logos are illuminated by a thin strip of LEDs.

The rear of the T-Roc has also been completely redesigned with a full-length LED strip, illuminated in the middle.

Inside, the SUV features high-quality materials and finishes, and boasts innovative technology for both driver and passenger.

In terms of driver comforts and infotainment, the T-Roc seems to feature the same multifunction leather steering wheel, automatic climate control, and 12.9-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the Tayron and Tiguan.

An optional head-up display is also available for the T-Roc.

VW completely redesigned the fabric structure on the surface of the dashboard for both visual and tactile upgrades.

Electrically adjustable 14-way ergoActive seats with massage function will also be made available in the R-Line.

Designers have also ensured greater interior space, including a 30-litre larger luggage compartment, which now allows for up to 475 litres when loaded to the height of the rear backrests.

Additional information regarding the new T-Roc and its launch will become available closer to the third quarter of the year, when the model is expected to launch.
