The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has announced the annual price adjustments for all major toll plazas in South Africa.
The toll fees are adjusted annually in line with the Consumer Price Index obtained from Statistics South Africa.
This year, the tariffs will be raised by 3.12% across the board, as published in the Government Gazette on 5 February 2026.
Thankfully, this is less than last year’s 4.85% adjustment.
The new prices will take effect at midnight on 1 March 2026.
Commenting on the fee increases, SANRAL General Manager for Communications and Marketing, Vusi Mona, said that toll revenue is necessary to maintain, operate and improve the nation’s toll roads.
The revenue generated from toll fees is also used to service debt incurred to implement road projects on the routes under SANRAL’s jurisdiction.
“The funds go a long way towards ensuring that SANRAL fulfils its mandate of delivering quality road infrastructure that adds value to the lives of South African citizens,” said Mona.
He said that key economic infrastructure, such as the national road network, is a precondition for providing basic services to citizens, such as water, sanitation, electricity, telecommunications and public transport.
Mona emphasised that well-maintained roads are essential to meet industrial, commercial and household needs.
“SANRAL is empathetic to the South African public, considering the current state of the economy,” he said.
“However, it is equally important to introduce the adjustments to ensure that the agency continues to deliver safe and quality roads to the benefit of all road users.”
What you’re paying at toll plazas in South Africa in 2026
These are the official toll plaza fees for 2026, as they are listed in the Goverment Gazette.
Note that the tariffs are staggered for different classes of vehicles, ranging from 1 to 4.
Class 1 is for Light Vehicles, referring to all vehicles other than heavy vehicles, with or without a trailer.
This includes cars, motorcycles, and motor tricycles, meaning this is the class that is relevant to most road users.
Class 2, 3 and 4 refer to Medium Heavy Vehicles, Large Heavy Vehicles, and Extra Large Heavy Vehicles, which mainly apply to various commercial transports.
The following table shows the toll amounts payable by vehicles at the toll plazas located on the Hans Strydom Interchange in Pretoria to the Gauteng/Mpumalanga Border, and the Maputo Development Corridor.
