New Suzuki Across goes on sale in South Africa – Pricing and features

Suzuki has officially launched the new Across in South Africa.

The Across is the carmaker’s latest SUV, slotting in between the Fronx and the Grand Vitara.

“The Japanese brand’s most advanced SUV yet, it combines dashing good looks with cutting-edge technology, class-leading safety features, an efficient mild-hybrid petrol engine, and family-friendly space and practicality,” said Suzuki.

It is now available in three specifications, and prices start at R349,900.

Engine

The Across range is powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with mild hybrid (MHEV) technology.

It produces a total of 76kW and 137Nm, which is sent to the front wheels.

The base trim level, the G, is available with either a five-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic, while the top-end GLX is only sold with the automatic.

The mild hybrid system uses an integrated starter generator, which assists the petrol engine under load and recovers kinetic energy during deceleration.

This energy is fed back into the 12V lithium-ion hybrid battery, according to the company.

It also has a Stop/Start function to minimise fuel consumption when the vehicle is stationary.

As a result, the Across achieves a frugal average fuel consumption of 5.3l/100km.

Features

Visually, the new Suzuki features a set of narrow LED projector headlamps with integrated daytime running lights, which are linked by a satin chrome strip running along the upper grille.

It also features a large trapezoidal lower intake, an aluminium-look protective front underguard, and compact circular fog lamps with a piano-black frame.

The GL is fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels, which are swapped for dual-tone machined alloy rims on the GLX.

Both versions have 215/60 profile tyres with a full-size spare.

At the back, the Across has a seamless taillight cluster comprised of 19 LED segments, which stretches across the width of the vehicle.

Additionally, it has an integrated rear spoiler, an aluminium-look skid plate, and a set of roof rails.

Buyers can choose from several colour options, including Arctic White Pearl, Splendid Silver Pearl Metallic, Mystic Green Pearl, Magma Grey Metallic, Sizzling Red Metallic, Exuberant Blue Pearl Metallic and Bluish Black Pearl.

The GLX allows for further customization with three-tone paint finishes where Splendid Silver Pearl Metallic, Sizzling Red Metallic or Exuberant Blue Pearl Metallic can be contrasted with a roof skin in Bluish Black Pearl.

Inside, Suzuki has opted for a modern, minimalist design with a three-level dashboard, stitched upholstery, and chrome door handles.

It has an illuminated glove box, four cup holders, four bottle holders, a large centre console box with an integrated armrest, a wireless charger, and two 12V sockets.

Standard kit on the GL includes a height-adjustable driver’s seat, fabric upholstery, automatic air conditioning, a multifunction steering wheel, an electric tailgate, six airbags, cruise control, hill assist, rear parking sensors, and a reverse camera.

On the dashboard, you’ll find a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 10.1-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The automatic version also has an electronic handbrake and paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

Anyone who upgrades to the GLX can expect synthetic leather seats with copper stitching, an eight-way electric driver’s seat, ventilated front seats, a leather steering wheel, a heads-up display, an eight-speed Harmon Infinity stereo, a 360-degree camera, 64-colour ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof.

Furthermore, the GLX expands the driver assistance suite with front parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane departure prevention, lane keep assist, blind spot detection, and rear cross-traffic alert.
