Diesel prices hit R27.50 per litre in South Africa

TotalEnergies has raised diesel prices, charging R27.50 per litre at forecourts across South Africa

Our sister publication MyBroadband recently spotted the higher price at a TotalEnergies service station in Douglasdale in Johannesburg.

According to Netwerk24, the company sent a letter to its station owners instructing them to hike prices.

The leaked letter shows that TotalEnergies told owners to gradually increase their diesel pump prices by R8 per litre.

“TotalEnergies Marketing South Africa (TMSA) recommended precautionary measures to be taken at service station level to avoid potential stock-outs,” the letter said.

“TMSA recommends, if not done already, to gradually increase the price of diesel to the anticipated price increase on 1 April 2026, thereby negating an abnormal demand in respect of service stations.”

The letter was issued in anticipation of greater demand after the company observed a significant increase in diesel sales.

“Please note that the current global crisis has resulted in an overall increase of R6 per litre in TMSA’s wholesale prices and extraordinary logistics costs,” TotalEnergies said.

“TMSA will apply this increase with effect from Wednesday, 25 March 2026.”

The fuel station franchise recommended that owners stagger the fuel increases over several days:

  • Wednesday, 25 March 2026 – R6.00 per litre increase
  • Thursday, 26 March 2026 – R1.00 per litre increase
  • Friday, 27 March 2026 – R1.00 per litre increase

Netwerk24 reported that a TotalEnergies filling station in Bloemfontein has already raised its prices by R8 per litre as of Wednesday 25 March.

Similarly, an employee at a station in Goodwood, Cape Town, confirmed that there had been an overnight increase at the forecourt.

These increases were implemented despite the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources not publishing new wholesale diesel prices until next week.

MyBroadband reached out to TotalEnergies for comment, but did not receive a response by the time of publication.
