New international flight for South Africa

South African domestic airline CemAir has reached a unilateral interline agreement with Spanish airline Air Europa to enhance connectivity between South Africa and Europe.

The agreement allows passengers travelling on Air Europa to connect to CemAir’s domestic and regional network in South Africa, which provides greater access to destinations across Southern Africa.

It also streamlines travel and itinerary planning, as the two airlines are committed to a single baggage handling process.

CemAir noted that the partnership strengthens its position as a trusted regional airline partner for international carriers seeking access to local destinations beyond the major metropolitan centres.

“Through Air Europa’s extensive network, travellers will also gain improved access to Europe and the Americas via the airline’s hub in Madrid,” the airline added.

CemAir Chief Commercial Officer Shaniel Singh welcomed the agreement with the Spanish airline.

“By combining Air Europa’s global reach with CemAir’s extensive Southern African network, we are able to offer travellers a more seamless and convenient journey while supporting tourism and business travel throughout the region,” he said.

Air Europa Alliances & CX Director Estelle Leray added that the Spanish airline is pleased to move forward with the agreement that allows its passengers to travel beyond Johannesburg.

“This partnership not only enhances connectivity and the overall travel experience but also strengthens Air Europa’s presence in Johannesburg, alongside a solid and well-established partner in the region,” she said.

The interline agreement is part of CemAir’s broader strategy to expand global partnerships and increase access to international destinations.

Bookings under CemAir and Air Europa’s agreement are available from today, 23 June 2026.

The first inbound flight from Madrid is scheduled for tomorrow, 24 June 2026, while the first outbound flight will depart O.R. Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) a day later.

Flying to Spain from South Africa

Air Europa confirmed the new route earlier this year, offering three weekly flights to Madrid, notably on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with flights returning on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The airline boasts one of the most modern and sustainable aircraft fleets in the industry, comprising 59 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and Boeing 737 models.

Headquartered at the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport in Madrid, Air Europa currently flies to more than 55 destinations worldwide, including the Americas.

It noted that adding Johannesburg to this list opens up new possibilities for travellers, as the city serves as one of the main economic centres of the African continent.

Return flights will cost around R15,000 per person, depending on the booking date and flight class.

Those who wish to be on the first flight out of ORTIA on 25 June for a week in Spain can expect to pay slightly more than R14,000 for a return ticket, thanks to the airline’s “economy lite” offerings.

This ticket allows for light travel – with a single 10kg carry-on and a small underseat bag.

Flights to and from Madrid will be aboard Air Europa’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, which the airline calls one of the most efficient in its class.

“This model not only reduces fuel consumption and emissions by up to 25%, but is also designed to make flying more comfortable,” it said.

“In addition, they feature an exclusive Business Class with seats that convert into two-meter beds and an onboard culinary experience created by chef Martín Berasategui.”

TopAuto visited Air Europa’s bookings website to look at how much these tickets would set travellers back.

A round trip for those carrying a standard business-class ticket will cost South African flyers around R75,000 per adult.
