New VW Caravelle launched in South Africa – Pricing and features

German automotive giant VW has announced the arrival of the all-new Caravelle eHybrid in South Africa.

The newest entry in VW’s long-standing bus range, the latest generation arrived with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain and a modular interior, which includes a picnic-style configuration.

The German carmaker explained that the Caravelle is built on the VW bus legacy, elevating passenger mobility and introducing refinement for those unwilling to sacrifice luxury for practicality.

“Each generation embraced new technologies, from more efficient engines and improved safety systems to digital connectivity and advanced driver assistance features while remaining unmistakably a Volkswagen Bus,” it said.

“Today, that journey enters its most significant chapter yet. The arrival of the Caravelle eHybrid demonstrates that electrification is not a departure from the Volkswagen Bus story; it is its natural evolution.”

The VW Caravelle eHybrid arrived in South Africa in a single derivative, priced at R1,794,000.

This includes a 3-year/120,000km manufacturer warranty, a 5-year/100,000km maintenance plan, and a 2-year unlimited or 8-year/160,000km battery warranty.

PHEV powertrain

Powering the Caravelle is the newly developed 1.5-litre TSI evo2 turbocharged petrol motor, which produces 130kW and 250Nm.

Mated to this is a single high-performance electric motor integrated into its six-speed DSG transmission, boosting power outputs to 180kW and 350Nm, making it the most powerful Caravelle ever offered in South Africa.

Power is distributed to all four wheels and regulated by its Electronic Stability Control (ESC), varying depending on the drive situation or traction at the axles.

This means up to 100% of the drive force can be directed to the front or rear axle, with the electric rear-wheel drive available even when the battery is empty.

Speaking of its battery, the 19.7kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery allows the Caravelle to travel up to 95km in all-electric mode, with the hybrid management system enabling a combined driving range up to 700km.

The eHybrid can recharge its battery on the move, thanks to its regenerative braking system that converts kinetic energy generated during deceleration into electrical energy, replenishing the battery during normal driving.

Recharging the battery can be done through its 7.4kW AC wallbox home charger, which provides a full charge in five-and-a-half hours, or through 11kW AC charging.

The Caravelle eHybrid also supports 40kW DC fast charging, enabling the battery to recharge from 10% to 80% in around 26 minutes under optimal conditions.

Features

As a premium offering, the Caravelle rides on 17-inch Dundrod alloy wheels and features dark-tinted rear privacy glass and IQ. LIGHT LED Matrix headlamps with Dynamic Light Assist and LED daytime running lights.

Its left and right sliding doors are electrically operated by easy open-and-close functionality, while it also features a power-operated tailgate and keyless entry and start for added convenience.

Inside, the bus is fitted with a range of comfort and convenience features, including three-zone climate control, a Harman Kardon premium sound system with 13 speakers and a dedicated subwoofer, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with shift paddles, and 30-colour ambient lighting, including second-row footwell illumination.

Advanced safety and driver assistance systems include Adaptive Cruise Control, a rear-view camera, Park Assist with front and rear Park Distance Control, Side Assist with Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Traffic Alert and Exit Warning.
