Mercedes-Benz has developed a new Electric Versatility Platform with the goal to have a battery-electric drivetrain offering across their whole van range.
The next-generation eSprinter van will be the first model based on the new e-drive platform – focused on reliability, quality, and lowering total cost of ownership – and is aiming for best-in-class performance while being carbon-neutrally produced.
“The core elements of the new platform are three modules that enable the greatest possible flexibility in the development and design of different body types,” said Mercedes.
Customers will have a choice between two wheel bases, three battery specifications, and multiple body configurations when customising their eSprinter.
Benefits that stem from using a new drivetrain enable Mercedes to make more body variants that are suited to more needs across various sectors – previously only possible on combustion engines – while remaining locally emission-free.
An investment of €350 million is driving the advancement of the electric versatility platform, said the company, which will first be focused on bringing electrically-powered vans to all market segments – and then furthering the electrical advances throughout model ranges.
Following models such as the eVito and eSprinter, Mercedes-Benz will further cover the battery-electric transporter segment with a new eCitan model.
As of today, Mercedes-Benz is an EV market leader with a share of more than 30% of midsize and large van segments in Europe, it said.
The new Electric Versatility Platform also enables Mercedes to work towards “Ambition 2039”, the plan to have all fleet offerings completely carbon neutral by the year 2039.
