Best-selling used cars in South Africa right now – With pricing

South Africa’s pre-owned car market experienced strong growth in July 2026, recording a sizeable month-on-month (MoM) increase after a weaker performance in June.

AutoTrader recorded a total of 34,759 sales on its platform in July, representing a 10.8% MoM increase over the 31,363 units sold in June.

Sales were also up 2.5% year-on-year (YoY) compared to the 33,919 moved in July 2025.

Toyota is still the country’s favourite second-hand brand, accounting for 6,055 of last month’s total. This was followed by VW with 4,595 sales, and Ford with 3,480 sales.

A standout performer was Suzuki, which experienced a 19% MoM and 20% YoY increase with 2,461 sales in July, putting it in fourth place ahead of Hyundai with 2,318 units.

As far as individual models are concerned, the Ford Ranger still dominates the space with 2,055 units, with each fetching an average price of R503,219 with 82,000km on the clock.

The Hilux came second with 1,661 sales, and the duo of the VW Polo Vivo and Polo finished third and fourth with 1,355 and 1,232 units, respectively.

Fifth place went to the Suzuki Swift with 883 new owners taking one home, and the Toyota Fortuner ended in sixth place with 795.

Two more Toyota models, the Corolla Cross and Starlet, added 625 and 614 units to the total, and the Hyundai Grand i10 and Isuzu D-Max rounded out the top 10 with 600 and 583 sales.

In July, the average used car sold on AutoTrader was valued at R433,552, up from R415,983 the year before.

The average mileage sat at around 70,483km, and the average model year was pegged at 2021.
