New limited-edition Land Rover Defender Dakar unveiled – What to expect

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is celebrating the Defender’s Dakar Rally win on its debut by launching an exclusive limited-run, road-legal version of the Defender D7X-R.

The British automaker’s rally division made history at the 2026 Dakar Rally, with three D7X-Rs finishing in first, second and fourth place in the new Stock class.

Now, Land Rover has revealed the first details of the Defender Dakar, but is keeping technical details and specifications under wraps until the 2027 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia.

“We’ve pushed our engineers to go further than they’ve ever gone before,” said Mark Cameron, Defender Managing Director.

“First, we evolved Defender OCTA into D7X-R, and then we asked: could we make the Dakar Rally-winning D7X-R road legal? The result is the Defender Dakar.”

He called the vehicle the “ultimate expression of adventure” and a true reflection of not only the spirit of the Defender Rally team but the continued and historic legacy of off-road innovation.

“This limited-run model will showcase everything we’ve learned in some of the toughest environments and most competitive conditions imaginable. An authentic Defender, made from unstoppable DNA,” he said.

While pricing has yet to be revealed, registrations of interest for the exclusive Defender Dakar can be submitted through JLR retailers, and reservations will be available from early 2027.

What we know so far

Land Rover’s “race car for the road” will retain the same tough D7x body architecture, transmission and driveline of the D7X-R competition car, which is based on the Defender OCTA.

It also has the same 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, which will be unrestricted by race regulations and produce 467kW and 750Nm.

The Defender Dakar will feature a 35-inch tyre package, with Advanced All-Terrain Tyres on new forged 20-inch wheels, alongside coil suspension with motorsport-proven Bilstein Advanced Dampers.

New drive modes for this model – Dunes, Gravel Drive, and Flight Mode – originally developed for the competition car, will be available on the production model.

The SUV’s design and exterior details include roof-mounted light pods, a fixed metal roof, carbon fibre raised air intakes, a carbon fibre bonnet, extended wheel arches with exposed rivets, a tailgate blanking plate and signature mud flaps.

To complete its race-inspired specification, the Defender Dakar also features an enhanced metal front undershield and underbody protection.

Buyers will be able to choose from a range of colour options, including the Dakar Sand body and Yanbu Turquoise roof combination inspired by the race-winning D7X-R livery.

Other options include Narvik Black and Alaska White, which are optional extras that come with Matte Protective Film.

Inside, this limited-run SUV will combine its rally-inspired details with rugged luxury, featuring a 2+2 seating configuration with row-one race seats designed for the model.

Optional four-point racing harnesses will be available, as will rear stowage designed to fit racing helmets, while the load space will feature a specially engineered mounting for the spare wheel and air compressor.
