State owned transport company selling 15 huge properties in South Africa
The state-owned transport company Transnet is planning to sell 15 large commercial properties in South Africa.
Transnet published a notice of intention in the Government Gazette on 24 August 2026, opening an invitation request for proposals for certain immovable properties under Section 52 (2) of the Public Finance Management Act of 1999.
In accordance with applicable legislation and government protocol, the properties will initially be made available to other state entities.
This includes national and provincial governmental departments, municipalities, and state-owned companies, which have the first right to express interest in acquiring or leasing the properties.
Interested parties must make an offer to the Acting Director-General of the Department of Transport within 30 days of the notice’s publication.
After this point, anything that is unsold will be made available for proposals from interested private companies.
Transnet said that the 15 commercial properties are not part of its core assets. This includes:

Transnet said that submissions expressing a party’s interest must clearly indicate the following:
- The property/properties of interest
- The intended public use or purpose
- Confirmation of budgetary provisions and/or funding availability
“Should no formal interest be received from any Government Department, SOC, or qualifying
public entity within the prescribed thirty (30) day period, TRANSNET SOC LTD shall proceed to
issue a public RFP to the open market for interested private sector parties,” it said.
