A new four-door Gran Coupe body style will be added to the latest BMW 4 Series range towards the end of 2021.
The new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe offers “noticeably enhanced driving dynamics, a sharper design, a refined premium feel for its interior, and a host of innovations in the areas of operation and connectivity”, said BMW.
Apart from the two extra doors, the new Gran Coupe variant is then nearly identical to the current 4 Series.
Distinctive design
The Gran Coupe measures in at 4,783mm long, 1,852mm wide, and 1,442mm tall.
“The model-specific body concept results in a versatile interior offering generous amounts of space in the rear,” said BMW.
The vehicle boasts 470 litres of boot space, five seats, comfortable access to the rear compartment, a large tailgate, and a variable-usage load compartment.
Load capacity can also be expanded to 1,290 litres by folding down the rear seats in a 40:20:40 split.
At the front, it sports the large kidney grille that made this generation of the 4 Series famous, along with full-LED lights.
The door handles now sit flush with the body, too, while a lip spoiler on the tailgate provides a dynamic element.
Interior
The interior of the Gran Coupe does not stray far from the two-door model, with a high centre console and luxurious trim elements flowing into the doors.
Sports seats and a leather multifunction steering wheel come standard across the range, and optional extras include features like heated and ventilated seats, a glass sunroof, ambient lighting, a Harman Kardon sound system, and the M Sports Pro styling package.
“Some 40 assistance functions designed to enable comfortable and safe driving and parking are available as standard or options for the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe,” adds the company.
Additionally, every 4 Series Gran Coupe will be fitted with the BMW Live Cockpit Professional package – featuring a digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment display.
This enables abilities like over-the-air software updates, cloud-based Maps with real-time traffic information, a personal voice assistant, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Performance
Due to the elongated body, the new Gran Coupe features a model-specific chassis and tuning.
The spring dampers are optimised for performance and ride comfort, said BMW, and 18-inch alloy wheels are fitted as standard.
Additionally, the vehicle’s driving dynamics benefit from an almost 50:50 weight distribution, a low centre of gravity, bespoke body struts, and active air flaps with an almost completely sealed underbody.
At launch, two petrol engines and one diesel engine will be available – with power outputs as follows:
- BMW 420i Gran Coupe – 135kW
- BMW 420d Gran Coupe – 140kW
- BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupe – 285kW
The engines are paired with an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission as standard, while the range-topping M440i receives an eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission.
Local pricing for the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe will be confirmed in the third quarter of 2021.
