The Chinese car brand taking South Africa by storm

Omoda & Jaecoo (O&J) is one of the fastest-growing car brands in South Africa, recording a 24% increase in sales in one year.

The Chinese twin brand announced that it sold a total of 4,310 units in the third quarter of 2026, equating to 47 cars per day.

It marks a 24.4% year-on-year increase from the 3,464 units sold in Q3 2025 and is more than triple the 1,392 sales recorded in Q3 2024.

“Omoda & Jaecoo registered a third consecutive year of Q3 sales growth in South Africa, maintaining positive momentum as total local sales surpassed 30,000 vehicles,” said the company.

“This growth aligns with the ongoing expansion of Brand OJ’s local lineup, introducing new models and diverse powertrain options across several key market segments.”

The carmaker’s cumulative sales surpassed 31,990 units by the end of September 2026. It sold 12,630 units in the first nine months of the year, eclipsing the 12,592 sales achieved throughout the whole of 2025.

“What stands out for us is the consistency of the growth we’re seeing,” said Shannon Gahagan, Head of Brand and Marketing for O&J South Africa.

“To have increased our third-quarter sales for three consecutive years, while also passing 30,000 cumulative sales in South Africa, shows that we are continuing to build real momentum in the market.”

September saw the brand reach its highest monthly sales to date, reaching 1,503 units. This success was largely due to two models, the Omoda C5 and Jaecoo J5, which sold 936 and 410 units, respectively.

“September’s record result, together with new highs for both the C5 and J5, also shows the value of continuing to expand our product offering and giving South African customers more choice across our two brands.”

The Chery sub-brand said that the C5 continues to anchor its portfolio in South Africa, with cumulative sales reaching 21,293 since the car was launched back in 2023.

The C5 accounts for 66.6% of Omoda and Jaecoo’s combined sales since launch. However, the company noted that its new-energy vehicles, such as the C5 and J5 SHS (Super Hybrid System) are also starting to gain traction.

It said that its electrified vehicles accounted for 2,081 deliveries in the first nine months of 2026, spanning hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric models.

Omoda and Jaecoo to build cars in South Africa

Earlier this year, O&J’s parent company Chery acquired Nissan’s Rosslyn factory in Gauteng, which is now being retooled to build a new selection of cars.

This includes models from the Omoda and Jaecoo stables, as the carmaker confirmed that the Jaecoo J5 and the upcoming Omoda C4 will be built at the plant.

In October 2026, Omoda announced that the C4 crossover will enter production in the third quarter of 2027.

The C4 is the brand’s new entry-level vehicle, and will feature a choice of internal combustion engine (ICE), hybrid, and electric powertrains.

Jaecoo, meanwhile, confirmed that the J5 will also join the production queue at Rosslyn next year, and that it will also feature a choice of ICE and electrified drivetrains.

Other Chery Group vehicles that are set to enter local production include the Chery Tiggo Cross SUV, the Grootman bakkie, and the Jetour T-Series Adventure SUVs.
