Every crossover you can buy for less than a VW Polo Vivo in South Africa
For the same price as VW’s cheapest hatchback, the Polo Vivo, South African car buyers could be buying any one of six crossover SUVs instead.
The entry-level VW Polo Vivo hatch has a sticker price of R271,900. For this, you get a locally built, 1.4-litre naturally aspirated petrol hatch producing 55kW and 130Nm.
Its power is distributed to the front wheels only via a five-speed manual gearbox, and the combined system boasts an average fuel consumption of 5.5l/100km.
The rest of the set-up is relatively bare-bones, including 14-inch steel wheels, two airbags as standard, cloth seats, and a basic 9-inch infotainment system with Bluetooth, USB, and Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
For roughly R50,000 less than the price of the Polo, local buyers can take home the country’s cheapest crossover SUV – the Renault Kiger – instead.
After the crossover’s update around a year ago, the Kiger features a 1.0-litre petrol engine producing 52kW and 96Nm, coupled with a five-speed manual gearbox, and averages fuel consumption of 5.3l/100km.
It also features new 16-inch wheels, a new front grille and bonnet, redesigned front and rear bumpers, LED headlights, C-shaped LED taillights, and fog lamps.
Inside, the Renault is fitted with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a multi-function steering wheel and four airbags as standard.
Two higher-spec Kiger models also come in under the price of the VW, featuring more upgrades over the entry-level model.
These include a multi-view camera system, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, a six-speaker 3D Arkamys surround sound system, a cooled lower glove box, and automatic air conditioning with rear vents.
Beyond the Renault, buyers can choose from one of five unique offerings, including the Tata Punch, Tata Osprey, Nissan Magnite, Mahindra XUV 3X0, or Hyundai Exter – all of which are built in India.
Narrowly missing out on the list are the Citroën C3, which comes in slightly above the Vivo with a R274,900 price tag, and the Chery Tiggo Cross with its R279,900 sticker price.
