New Toyota GR Yaris launched in South Africa – Pricing and features

Toyota has updated the coveted GR Yaris for South Africa, adding a new Aero Performance Package as standard.

The package has given the hot hatchback new sporty additions that enhance its appearance while also improving its performance.

The Aero Performance Package is valued at R18,000, which has resulted in a corresponding increase in the price of both the manual and automatic versions.

Following the upgrade, the manual now starts at R969,600, while the auto costs R999,000.

What’s new

The Yaris is still powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which develops a substantial 210kW and 390Nm.

The manual version has a six-speed shifter, while the automatic has eight gears. In both cases, power is sent to all four wheels.

This lets the hot hatch accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.2 seconds, and it caps out at a top speed of 230km/h.

What is new is the Aero Performance Package, which starts with a new front spoiler meant to combat lift, and a ducted aluminium hood designed to improve engine cooling.

Another striking new addition is a large rear wing that “contributes to handling stability at high speeds and suppresses snake-like movement during braking,” according to the manufacturer.

Toyota has also fitted new rear bumper ducts to “suppress the rear bumper’s parachute effect and decrease the drag coefficient.”

All of this is on top of what was already offered on the three-door car, including LED headlights, 18-inch alloy rims, red brake callipers, keyless entry and start, automatic climate control, a leather steering wheel (with paddle shifters on the automatic), suede and leather upholstery, and an infotainment screen.

It also has tyre pressure monitoring, six airbags, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection, and lane-keep assist.
