VW South Africa revealed that it has sold 32,603 new vehicles in the first six months of 2021.
This is 6,824 more than the same period in 2020, which was affected by strict Covid-19 lockdown regulations.
VW South Africa said that through its year-on-year sales improvement, it has remained South Africa’s leading passenger car brand – with a market share of 24.4%
Steffen Knapp, Head of VW Passenger Cars, said: “The automotive industry has been severely affected by the worldwide shortage of semiconductor chips and vehicle transportation related challenges this year, so to have increased our sales from last year is a remarkable achievement.”
Sales
The locally-made Polo Vivo accounted for 11,560 sales – making it South Africa’s best-selling passenger vehicle.
The second best-selling passenger vehicle for the company in South Africa was the Polo, with 9,045 units sold in the first six months of this year.
VW’s best-selling SUV was then the T-Cross, with 3,893 units sold.
The rest of the SUV range, consisting of the T-Roc, Tiguan, Tiguan Allspace, and the Toureg, accounted for a combined total sales of 1,726 units.
The Amarok was VW’s best-selling commercial vehicle for the first half of 2021, with 908 units sold.
New vehicles
VW is also bolstering its vehicle portfolio this year by introducing new models.
This includes the highly-anticipated Golf 8 GTI – which is set to be launched in July – and the new generation of the Caddy, which will be introduced in October.
VW stated that the recently-launched new-generation Tiguan will also help them increase their sales in the second half of this year.
