BMW has unveiled the new iX3 electric SUV, which will arrive in South Africa in the first quarter of 2022.
The new iX3 is the first model to feature the fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology – an advanced concept that provides a “unique combination of sporting prowess, exceptional efficiency, and long-distance ability”, said BMW.
The iX3’s design is reminiscent of the petrol-powered range it is based on, the X3, but it receives a distinctive look thanks to an enlarged kidney grille, slimmer lights, and a redesigned front bumper.
At the rear, three-dimensional LED taillights and signature accents in BMW i-Blue differentiate this electric SUV further.
In addition, the iX3 adds the M Sport styling package as standard. This sees the fitment of M Aerodynamic 20-inch wheels and adaptive LED headlights across the range.
Features
Inside the BMW iX3, owners receive a high grade of standard equipment – headlined by a fully-digital cockpit.
A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is now complemented by an equally-sized infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, over-the-air software updates, and cloud-based navigation.
Vernasca leather sports seats are standard, too, along with i-Blue accents on the gear lever, multifunction steering wheel, and Start/Stop button.
Additionally, every iX3 offers a Driving Experience Control switch that allows driver customisation for settings like steering sensitivity and suspension stiffness.
Two equipment lines will then be available when buying the iX3.
The “Inspiring” specification offers metallic paintwork, adaptive suspension, an automatic tailgate, a panoramic sunroof, electrically-adjustable front seats, a Sport steering wheel, and three-zone climate control.
On top of this, the “Impressive” trim-line adds extra acoustic insulation, a heads-up-display, a Harman Kardon stereo system, and the BMW IconicSounds Electric audio pack that offers a range of vehicle sounds to replicate the engine noise found on internal-combustion engine cars.
Safety systems and driver assistance features were then standardised across the line-up, as each iX3 offers active cruise control, steering and lane control assist, parking assist with a reverse camera, and speed limit assist with route monitoring.
Performance
The BMW iX3 is powered by an 80kWh high-voltage battery that connects to an electric motor which generates a maximum output of 210kW and 400Nm.
The SUV’s drive system, electric motor, transmission, and power electronics were also built into one housing to save space and weight.
This results in a 0-100km/h time of 6.8 seconds, an electricity consumption of 18.5kWh/100km, and a driving range of up to 460km.
At a fast-charging rate of 150kW, 10 minutes of charging will add around 100km of range, said BMW.
Price
The South African pricing for the new BMW iX3 has not been announced yet.
The BMW iX3 is expected to arrive in the country in the first quarter of 2022.
