The cars that claim to be the most petrol efficient have always had the smallest engines or the newest technologies, and this remains true in 2021.
Unfortunately, the vehicles falling in the latter camp are usually top-end vehicles with hefty price tags.
As such, we set out to find the 10 cars in South Africa that claim to have the lowest combined fuel consumption figures – but are below the R500,000 mark.
Not surprisingly, the most fuel-efficient vehicle that satisfied these demands turned out to be the new Toyota Corolla Hybrid.
Rather unexpectedly, however, the biggest portion of cars consisted of entry-level hatchbacks with relatively minuscule motors.
While these vehicles might not boast the highest engine outputs, they are good alternatives for consumers looking for a wallet-friendly and frugal runabout.
Top 10
Listed below are the 10 cars in South Africa under R500,000 that claim to have the lowest combined fuel consumption figures.
It must be noted that if one brand had more than one car that qualified to be on the list, we only selected the vehicle with the best claimed fuel consumption figure – to ensure a range of brands were shown.
