Out of the total of 39,177 new vehicles sold in South Africa in May, the top 20 best-selling cars accounted for just over half at 19,655 vehicles (50.2%) sold.
For the first time, Suzuki took home the trophy of best-selling car in the country with its Swift, which moved a total of 1,764 units.
The Swift’s sales have been on an upward trend in recent months, with the little hatchback being the 10th best-selling car in the country in March and the second best-selling in April.
The Swift in May was followed by the Ford Ranger, which also displayed a good performance when compared to a month before by selling an additional 408 models, jumping from sixth best-selling car in the country in April to the second best-selling in May.
In third then sits the Toyota Hilux, which has become accustomed to being first over the past few years.
However, this slide in positioning is largely attributed to the Durban-based Toyota factory suffering severe damage due to flooding and being out of production for roughly 12 weeks.
Toyota said it will “take some time” for local assembly lines of the Hilux, Fortuner, Hiace, Corolla Cross, and Corolla Quest to reopen, and that the local market may experience stock shortages as a result.
These shortages have now materialized, as evidenced by the 2,288-unit dip in sales for the automaker from April to May.
