New R2-million Land Rover Discovery flagship in South Africa – Specifications

Land Rover South Africa has added a new model to the Discovery line-up badged the Metropolitan Edition, sitting above the usual S, Dynamic SE, and Dynamic HSE trims.

The Metropolitan is positioned as the flagship of the range with an impressive price tag to match, that being R2,010,000.

The SUV can now be customised on the company’s vehicle configurator and is available in both petrol and diesel specifications.

Powertrains

The new Discovery can be had with a 3.0-litre, turbocharged diesel or petrol motor – the latter of which features 48V mild-hybrid technology.

The D300 diesel has an output of 221kW and 650Nm, while the P360 petrol strikes a greater balance of power and torque with 265kW and 500Nm.

Despite its hybrid leanings, the petrol model is still the thirstier of the two consuming an average of 9.3l/100km, while the diesel manages 7.8l/100km.

The D300 can also reach 100km/h in 6.9 seconds, which the P360 is then able to reduce by another 0.4 seconds.

Regardless of the version chosen, the Discovery will have an all-wheel-drive layout, an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and electronic air suspension with terrain response.

Features

As you’d expect from the range-topping variant of an already premium SUV, the Metropolitan comes standard with an extensive list of equipment.

The front has been given adaptive Matrix LED headlights, and the car itself is perched atop 22-inch diamond-turned gloss dark grey alloy wheels with black brake calipers and all-terrain tyres, all of which help to give it a ground clearance of 283mm.

The seven-seater also has privacy glass on the rear windows, a sliding front sunroof, a rear panoramic sunroof, keyless entry and start, and an electric tailgate.

Inside, you’ll find a Light Oyster/Ebony Windsor leather upholstery with a cross-stitch pattern, four-zone climate control with an air purification system, an ebony Morzine headlining, a heated leather steering wheel, ambient cabin lighting, a wireless charger, and a refrigerator in the front centre console.

There are heating and ventilation functions for the first and second seat rows, too, a 20-way electronically-adjustable driver’s chair with a captain’s armrest and memory function, and heated third-row seats.

The dashboard is equipped with a digital instrument cluster with a heads-up display, as well as a 12.3-inch Pivi Pro infotainment system, which connects to a Meridian sound system and features on-board navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

Safety equipment comprises eight airbags, emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, a 3D surround camera, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear park distance control.
