
The number of Chinese cars in South Africa is growing at an exponential rate, as there are at least another 21 cars scheduled to make their debut before the end of 2024.
The last few months saw a stream of announcements from new brands declaring their intention to launch in our market, including GAC Motors, Foton, and LDV.
LDV already opened up shop with its first vehicle, the T60 bakkie, which will soon be joined by a new SUV, MPV, and panel van.
Foton is re-entering South Africa in June with its own double cab, the Tunland G7, as well as several light and medium commercial vehicles aimed at the business sector.
Another newcomer is GAC Motors, which is bringing three new SUVs, two of which run on petrol while the third is a battery-electric (BEV).
On that note, BYD will be launching its second car in South Africa in the near future called the Dolphin, which an electric hatchback that is poised to become the country’s cheapest BEV with its projected starting price of R550,000.
Chery is launching plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of the Tiggo 7 Pro and 8 Pro, and its two sub-brands Jaecoo and Omoda are also bringing over a selection of new models.
Jaecoo has the J7 PHEV and luxurious J8 to look forward to, as well as the J6, the latter of which is an electric SUV that is being rebadged from the automaker’s “iCar” division.
Omoda fans can then expect the flagship C9 (pulled from Chery’s Exeed brand), and the E5 – the electric version of the C5 already on sale.
GWM will add the P500 bakkie and the Tank 500 SUV to its line-up, while Haval is introducing the Jolion Pro and H7.
Finally, JAC’s range-topping T9 double cab, which has thus far only featured a turbocharged diesel engine, is expected to get two new powertrains comprising a PHEV and BEV option.
Rapid expansion
These are all of the Chinese cars that are expected to arrive in South Africa before the end of the year, bearing in mind that certain models could be delayed on short notice.
