With South Africa being a major bakkie market, there is no shortage of affordable options if you’re itching to go “4×4-ing” on a budget.
For under R500,000 there are three options to choose from all with well-known badges on their nose, these being the GWM Steed 5, JAC T6, and Mahindra Pik Up.
Spend a little more and you can get the country’s newest Chinese double cab, the LDV T60.
Say you’re after a tried-and-trusted brand, there’s the Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara, Isuzu D-Max, and Toyota Hilux each with a 4×4 entry under R700,000. They may be a little pricier but come with the extra peace of mind of having a well-established local presence and dependable after-sales support.
Looking for something a little less ubiquitous and more luxurious, the Peugeot Landtrek, Mitsubishi Triton, VW Amarok, Jeep Gladiator, and Ineos Quartermaster all have well-equipped double cabs that are capable of turning all four wheels, though they are somewhat pricier than their competitors.
If you can wait until June, you will even be able to pick up the new Foton Tunland G7. While its pricing has yet to be revealed, the manufacturer promised that the G7 will be one of the most attainable models in its class.
