Entry-level vs top-spec Chery Tiggo 4 Pro – The difference R136,000 makes

Chery has updated its popular Tiggo 4 Pro series for South Africa, adding in two new units with a heavily-requested feature.

The newcomers in question are equipped with a dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT), giving customers a snappier alternative to the continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) used by the other self-shifting models.

A DCT comes at a premium, however, as the range-topping trim level combined with this gearbox goes for a minimum of R415,900, making it R136,000 more expensive than the cheapest model in the range, which starts at R279,900.

That’s a substantial price difference for this market segment, so buyers should take a close look at the differences between the top and bottom entries to see what they have to offer, and which one is best for their tastes and budget.

Engines

The base Tiggo 4 Pro LiT is fitted with a 1.5-litre, naturally-aspirated petrol engine which puts out a total of 83kW and 138Nm.

This connects to a five-speed manual gearbox, resulting in an average fuel consumption of 7.0l/100km.

In contrast, the top-end Tiggo 4 Pro Elite uses a turbocharged version of the same drivetrain, which substantially raises its power cap to 108kW and 210Nm.

As previously mentioned, it features a new six-speed DCT, which has the added benefit of a lower consumption figure of 6.7l/100km despite the added power.

All versions of the Chery are front-wheel drive, though the three selectable driving modes for Normal, Eco, and Sport are reserved for the mid-range units onwards, so the LiT does not get them.

Features

The LiT was introduced in late 2023 as a more affordable entry point for consumers, which means its equipment sheet is a little more spartan than the other Tiggo 4 Pros.

That being said, it still comes with a decent amount of kit including 16-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, hill assist, tyre-pressure monitoring, rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, a multifunction steering wheel, manual air conditioning, fabric seats, Bluetooth, four speakers, a 3.5-inch driver’s display, and a 10.25-inch media screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

As for the new option, the DCT units benefit from a revised centre console similar to the ones on the Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro with digital dual-zone climate controls, an additional storage area, a 15W wireless charging pad, and an improved touchscreen with offline navigation.

This is on top of the items already included on the Elite spec, such as six airbags, traction control, a 360-degree camera, keyless entry and start, auto-folding mirrors, cruise control, 17-inch alloys, automatic LED headlights, a sunroof, red brake calipers, ambient lighting, a 7-inch instrument cluster, leather upholstery, an electric driver’s seat, and six speakers.
