The Toyota Hilux has proven that its local customer base is undeterred by an uncertain economic outlook with an uptick in sales during the month of the national elections.
The fan-favourite bakkie sold a total of 2,367 units, improving on its 2,094-strong April figure by 273 units.
Not far behind it was the Ford Ranger, South Africa’s consistent runner-up in the double-cab competition, which scored 2,216 new customers in May.
These two models were the only ones to achieve more than 2,000 purchases, as the rest of the sales are dramatically lower in comparison.
Of course, the Isuzu D-Max in third still performed well with 1,282 purchases – another improvement from the prior month.
Mahindra’s sales, meanwhile, dropped a little bit, but its Pik Up series is still standing strong in fourth with 716 units moved.
The big surprise last month, however, was the Toyota Land Cruiser 79, which generally lands around ninth place but was able to climb all the way to the fifth spot with a respectable 459 sales.
The Nissan Navara was right behind it with 423 registrations, and the VW Amarok took the seventh position with 325.
Another major surprise is that the Nissan NP200 is still in the top 10 and actually landed in the eighth position with 297 examples finding buyers.
The NP200 was discontinued in April but the company built additional stock to supply the market a few months longer, and the fact it’s still selling strong is a testament to the model’s popularity.
The final two places were taken by GWM’s P-Series and Steed, which sold 205 and 105 units, respectively.
